Welcome to Philanthropy Friday!

A collection of thoughts and information about making the world just a little bit better.

More from Honduras

We had an incredible time in Honduras last week, providing hope, opportunity, and empowerment to thirteen new entrepreneurs! One of those newly-funded micro businesses is particularly impressive. Francis is a bright young MBA student that has always dreamed of owning her own business. We were introduced to Francis through mutual friends at her church, and we quickly realized she was an ideal microfinance candidate. Her new business, “The Baking Mom” is an upscale bakery that specializes in a “cake in a jar”. Francis already has one location at the Honduran International Airport in Palmerola, has hired her first employee, and has plans for expansion. Check out our video with Francis and I think you will agree she is destined for success.

You should talk to your kids about this

As parents, we want to raise children who are kind and charitable. We want them to experience the joy of philanthropy and helping others. But this will not happen without our active involvement. “A recent study conducted by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University found that parents plan an important role in preparing their children to become charitable adults.” The study went on to illustrate that parents who talk to their children about charitable giving “significantly increase the likelihood that those children will give to charity.” Other suggestions: Be a role model of giving for your kids, involve your children in your charitable giving, and incorporate charitable giving into your children’s allowance. Check out some additional talking points that can help get your kids get started on a life of giving here:

Something to ponder

“If you’re in the luckiest 1% of humanity, you owe it to the rest of humanity to think about the other 99%”

- Warren Buffett

So, are you in the top 1%? Well, according to the 2018 Global Wealth Report from the Credit Suisse Research Institute, $871,320 in net worth qualifies for the top 1%. https://thelifeyoucansave.org/blog/how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-philanthropy/

A verse I am meditating on

These are divisive times we are living in, and it seems lots of people are “on edge” -even angry. For some reason, kindness, manners, and common civility are often lacking in conversations involving politics, social issues, and even faith. Last Sunday, our co-pastor, Rev. Dr. David Bruner, delivered an excellent message on “Telling the truth, in love.” His message was loaded with reminders that it is still possible to disagree with others while maintaining a spirit of kindness and goodwill. The foundation of his message was Ephesians 4:1-16…”speak the truth in love.” Imagine a world in which we all did this. Let’s try. Check out Pastor Dave’s full message at KnoxPres.org

Keep it light

Tom was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune once his sickly father died, he decided he needed a wife with whom to share his fortune.

One evening, at an investment meeting, he spotted a beautiful and charming woman that he was attracted to. “I may look like just an ordinary man,” he said to her, “but in just a few years, my father will die and I’ll inherit 20 million dollars.” Impressed, the woman obtained his business card. Three days later, she became his stepmother.

Women are so much better at estate planning than men.

Bound for Belize!

I leave this Saturday with a small CareLink team to visit Belize for the purpose of determining the viability of establishing a CareLink operation in that country. Expansion into another country has been in our vision for many years, and a door has been recently opened with a strong strategic partner in Belize that can help us establish a microfinance operation there. This could be an excellent opportunity to touch more lives and expand our reach. During our week-long visit, we will meet with pastors and potential microfinance entrepreneurs to calibrate the market. We promise to keep you informed!
